Qualcomm: Chipset Sales, Licensing and Cash Conversion
Qualcomm's FY2025 revenue rose 13.7% to $44.284 billion. QCT's EBT/revenue ratio increased to 30.4%, while QTL's was 72.4%. Consolidated operating cash less capex rose to $12.820 billion; those group cash figures do not disclose cash margins for either segment.

Q3 FY2026 covers 2026-03-30 through 2026-06-28 and was released 2026-07-29. Revenue was $9,947 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 FY2026 results.
The quarter's GAAP and adjusted results use different expense/tax treatments. QCT product sales and QTL licensing have distinct recognition and collection dates; the FY2025 tax valuation allowance is not evidence of an equal cash tax payment.

One scale starts at zero. Exact period ends, definitions and sources accompany the table below.
| Fiscal year | Period ended | $ millions |

| FY2024 | 2024-09-29 | 11,161 |
| FY2025 | 2025-09-28 | 12,820 |

Complete annual operating and cash basis
The complete annual comparison uses the FY2025 annual filing, filed 2025-11-05. Periods ended 2024-09-29 and 2025-09-28; amounts are $ millions. Filing date, fiscal-year label and period end are separate dates.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, reported | 38,962 | 44,284 |
| Operating income, reported | 10,071 | 12,355 |
| Operating cash flow, reported | 12,202 | 14,012 |
| Property purchases / capex, cash outflow | 1,041 | 1,192 |
| Operating cash less displayed capex, derived | 11,161 | 12,820 |
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| QCT revenue | 33,196 | 38,367 |
| QCT EBT | 9,527 | 11,670 |
| QTL revenue | 5,572 | 5,582 |
| QTL EBT | 4,027 | 4,043 |
EBT is the issuer's segment earnings-before-tax measure. Calculated QCT EBT/revenue is 11,670 / 38,367 = 30.4%, versus 28.7%; QTL is 4,043 / 5,582 = 72.4%, versus 72.3%. QCT and QTL revenue total $43,949 million, $335 million below consolidated revenue; other businesses and reconciling items remain necessary, rather than allocating the entire group to these two segments.
Why royalty timing differs from chipset shipment timing
The filing's revenue policy generally recognizes product sales when control transfers at shipment. Sales-based royalties are estimated in the period of the licensees' underlying sales, with later adjustments as reporting is completed. QTL royalty payments are generally due within the following quarter. Recognition, final licensee reporting and cash receipt can therefore fall on different dates.
In a forecast, give QCT its own product volumes, pricing and cost assumptions. For QTL, define the licensed sales population and the royalty terms that apply to it; do not silently equate it with Qualcomm chipset shipments. Track estimated royalties, subsequent adjustments and collections separately. That approach exposes whether a change concerns underlying activity, the effective royalty economics or the timing of payment.
Reconcile the segments to consolidated cash
The FY2025 consolidated subtraction is 14,012 - 1,192 = $12,820 million, compared with 12,202 - 1,041 = $11,161 million in FY2024. The prior total operating-cash line includes a negative $91 million discontinued-operation cash component; an expressly continuing-business valuation needs a consistent scope rather than mixing that total with a different population.
The FY2025 deferred-tax valuation allowance of about $5.7 billion is not an equal cash tax payment. Retain the actual tax-payment, working-capital and non-cash reconciliation; allocating consolidated cash in proportion to segment EBT would invent segment cash data.
Build a scenario that identifies the source of change
One analyst case can change the handset-related product mix while leaving licensing terms unchanged. A second can change the licensed sales base or collection delay without assuming the same movement in chipset sales. Keep those assumptions explicit and reconcile their combined effect through group expenses, cash taxes and reinvestment. A margin observation from one historical year is not a terminal-margin forecast.
The manual company forecast accepts your assumptions, rather than fetching Qualcomm accounts. Use the DCF calculator after selecting a consistent continuing-operation cash basis and discount rate. The Apple financial analysis offers another way to examine product mix and cash reporting.
What customers pay for and what changes the economics
Qualcomm's QCT sells chips and licenses system software for handsets, automotive and IoT applications; QTL licenses intellectual property under a separate model. Automotive offerings include connectivity, digital cockpit and driver-assistance technology. The FY2025 filing describes long automotive design-in cycles and demanding qualification standards. A design selection thus represents a different revenue opportunity from a shipped handset component, and neither is the same population as QTL's licensed sales. (FY2025 source.)
Analysis: Split QCT growth into end-device volume, Qualcomm content per device and realized pricing. A more capable platform can lift content without a stronger handset market. Automotive diversification can add long-lived programs, but revenue timing follows customer vehicle launches and production, not the announcement of a design win. Keep engineering and qualification spending ahead of that revenue in the forecast.
Operating signals to carry into the forecast
Watch these signals on a consistent period and definition. Undisclosed measures remain questions to investigate, rather than supplied KPI data.
- Handset volume and premium/content mix: separate market recovery from more silicon per device.
- Automotive design conversion and vehicle production: distinguish awarded opportunity from shipments.
- IoT demand by consumer, industrial and networking context: avoid projecting one recovery rate.
- QTL licensed activity and QCT customer exposure: retain separate royalty and chip-volume scenarios.
SWOT and the forecast consequence
SWOT classifications and forecast consequences are analytical judgments; evidence uses the dated sources cited below.
| Assessment | Evidence | Conditional forecast consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Connectivity and low-power computing technologies span handset, automotive and IoT products. (FY2025 source.) | Reuse can support product breadth, but each market still needs its own adoption and cost case. |
| Weakness | Automotive qualification and design-in periods are long. (FY2025 source.) | A diversification case may require years of spending before volume; stress launch timing and customer production. |
| Opportunity | Digital cockpit, connectivity and driver-assistance content can expand the product opportunity. (FY2025 source.) | An upside needs shipped vehicle programs and retained content economics rather than design-win announcements alone. |
| Threat | The filing identifies competition from products developed internally by customers. (FY2025 source.) | A customer insourcing case can reduce chip content without the same movement in total device demand or licensing activity. |
Valuation implication: Compare handset recovery, higher content and automotive conversion as distinct scenarios. A diversification premium needs contribution that arrives within a funded development timetable. Preserve the different QTL licensed-sales and QCT shipment bases; historical segment EBT is not a disclosed segment cash margin.
