Qualcomm DCF Analysis
Qualcomm’s DCF should distinguish semiconductor product economics from licensing economics and from group tax accounting. QCT and QTL EBT are segment performance measures, while investor cash is consolidated. The financial base below connects annual costs and profit to cash before a forecast assigns margin, payment timing or value to either business.
Separate operating cost from the large tax movement
Fiscal years ended September 29, 2024 and September 28, 2025. Annual net-profit comparisons below use continuing operations; FY2024 total net income also included discontinued operations. Amounts use the monetary scale stated in each table caption. Source: annual financial statements. Reported lines retain the issuer’s scope; derived ratios use the displayed denominators.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 38,962 | 44,284 |
| Cost of revenues | 17,060 | 19,738 |
| R&D | 8,893 | 9,042 |
| SG&A | 2,759 | 3,110 |
| Other operating expense | 179 | 39 |
| Operating income | 10,071 | 12,355 |
| Income tax expense | 226 | 7,122 |
| Continuing-operations net income | 10,110 | 5,541 |
| Operating margin: derived | 25.8% | 27.9% |
Reported continuing profit fell while operating income rose; those are different parts of the valuation bridge. The valuation-allowance issue affects tax accounting and is not evidence of an equal cash-tax payment. A DCF needs an explicit operating-tax assumption rather than treating one reported rate as permanent.
Retain research and customer support needed by the product and licensing cases. A chipset design win and a licensing agreement can have different recognition, collection and renewal patterns. Forecast their economics separately before reconciling group corporate cost and cash.
Read segment EBT on its own denominator
The annual segment table reports these two businesses. EBT means earnings before tax under the segment presentation; the ratios below are derived from the displayed rows.
| Business | Revenue | EBT | EBT / revenue: derived |
|---|---|---|---|
| QCT | 38,367 | 11,670 | 30.4% |
| QTL | 5,582 | 4,043 | 72.4% |
These segment ratios are not consolidated cash margins. The two revenue rows also do not comprise the complete group reconciliation, and segment EBT should not be added to group operating income. Reconcile other activities and corporate items after building the product and licensing cases.
Trace earnings into cash and reinvestment
Reconciliation source: annual earnings and cash-flow statements. Subtotals below are checkpoints, not extra amounts to add. Grouped adjustments are calculated from the disclosed cash-flow lines.
| Step | FY2025 |
|---|---|
| Operating income | 12,355 |
| Net investment income / interest | 308 |
| Income tax expense | -7,122 |
| Continuing net income: subtotal | 5,541 |
| Depreciation / amortization | 1,602 |
| Tax provision less payments | 3,980 |
| Share compensation | 2,783 |
| Other reconciliation | -308 |
| Operating assets / liabilities | 414 |
| Operating cash: subtotal | 14,012 |
| Capex | -1,192 |
| After capex: derived | 12,820 |
The tax-provision-versus-payments adjustment belongs to the historical cash reconciliation; it is not a second earnings measure or a forecast of a recurring tax benefit. Other reconciliation groups asset impairment, investment gains/losses and other items. The operating-balance group includes receivables, inventory, other assets, payables, payroll and unearned revenue.
Cash after capex precedes other investments, business purchases and financing. Share compensation reconciles current cash but still requires dilution treatment in the equity bridge. Do not add it back in cash while assuming that the current shareholder claim is unchanged without an explicit share schedule.
Stress product-segment contribution without relabeling it group cash
Illustration: reduce QCT’s EBT-to-revenue ratio by two percentage points on fixed FY2025 QCT revenue, with no assumed offset in QTL. This is a segment-contribution sensitivity, not guidance or a direct cash-flow forecast.
| Measure | Historical basis | Illustrative case |
|---|---|---|
| QCT revenue | 38,367 | 38,367 |
| QCT EBT | 11,670 | 10,902.7 |
The exact pre-tax segment effect is $767.34 million, displayed to one decimal. A group case must then reconcile corporate and other items, operating tax, collections, inventory and reinvestment. Applying the EBT change directly to a discounted cash stream would skip those steps.
Keep interim reporting separate from the annual basis
Q3 FY2026 covers 2026-03-30 through 2026-06-28 and was released 2026-07-29. Revenue was $9,947 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 FY2026 results.
The later fiscal quarter’s GAAP and adjusted results retain different expense and tax treatment. Keep the quarter separate from the full-year base, and reconcile any later product/licensing mix or tax development before changing the forward cash assumptions.
Turn the financial basis into a DCF case
| Decision | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Product economics | Separate QCT design/volume/product mix assumptions and the research/support required to sustain them. |
| Licensing economics | Use a dated recognition, collection and renewal case rather than treating a segment EBT ratio as cash. |
| Tax | Reconcile provisions, valuation allowances and payments before choosing a normalized operating-tax assumption. |
| Cash funding | Carry receivables, inventory, capex and other relevant investment alongside earnings. |
| Equity bridge | Match cash definition to discounting, then reconcile dated financing claims, available cash and dilution. |
A conventional enterprise bridge starts from operating earnings after stated operating tax, adjusts non-cash allocations and deducts reinvestment and changes in operating funding. If the case starts from operating cash, reconcile financing and tax effects before treating it as unlevered cash. The terminal case must fund the continuing research and product/licensing support implied by its revenue assumptions.
The Qualcomm company analysis explains the wider operating context. Use the company forecast tool and DCF calculator with explicit assumptions. Use the historical financials to define an explicit operating and reinvestment case, then supply valuation-date capital costs, claims and diluted shares. Check that each cash claim is counted once before deriving a per-share value.
