Meta Platforms DCF Analysis
Meta’s DCF needs an advertising-economics case and an infrastructure-funding case. Reported operating income can rise while cash after property and lease payments falls. Keep annual economics separate from later legal charges, and reconcile the investment and tax schedules before turning either earnings or operating cash into a valuation stream.
Separate the annual cost base from later legal events
Years ended December 31, 2024 and 2025; consolidated annual statements. Later Q3 tables below are separate quarterly populations. Amounts use the monetary scale stated in each table caption. Source: annual financial statements. Reported lines retain the issuer’s scope; derived ratios use the displayed denominators.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 164,501 | 200,966 |
| Cost of revenue | 30,161 | 36,175 |
| R&D | 43,873 | 57,372 |
| Marketing / sales | 11,347 | 11,991 |
| General / administrative | 9,740 | 12,152 |
| Operating income | 69,380 | 83,276 |
| Net income | 62,360 | 60,458 |
| Operating margin: derived | 42.2% | 41.4% |
| Net income / revenue: derived | 37.9% | 30.1% |
Operating profit and net income diverge because taxes and nonoperating items sit below operations. The historical reconciliation is not a forecast of a permanent effective tax rate. Similarly, changing the assumed useful life of equipment changes depreciation timing without cancelling the payment required to obtain capacity.
Build monetization from paid advertising demand, ad delivery and realized price. Separate that operating case from the research and infrastructure needed to support it. A capacity expansion should have a commissioning and utilization schedule, rather than an automatic assumption that every new dollar invested earns the current group margin.
Keep the newer quarter’s revenue population separate
The Q3 2026 release is dated October 21 and labels its quarterly financials unaudited. It supplies this later revenue mix, not the FY2025 income table above.
| Revenue population | Quarterly amount |
|---|---|
| Advertising within Family of Apps | 63,061 |
| Other Family of Apps | 1,097 |
| Reality Labs | 443 |
| Consolidated | 64,601 |
The quarter’s reported operating income was $12,988 million and included a $9,890 million legal charge. Recognized expense, maximum agreement payments and settlement cash are different measures. Do not add the charge back and then assume the resulting amount is unencumbered recurring cash.
Trace earnings into cash and reinvestment
Reconciliation source: annual earnings and cash-flow statements. Subtotals below are checkpoints, not extra amounts to add. Grouped adjustments are calculated from the disclosed cash-flow lines.
| Step | FY2025 |
|---|---|
| Operating income | 83,276 |
| Interest and other income | 2,656 |
| Income tax provision | -25,474 |
| Net income: subtotal | 60,458 |
| Depreciation / amortization | 18,616 |
| Share compensation | 20,427 |
| Deferred tax | 18,738 |
| Investment / other adjustments | -1,554 |
| Operating assets / liabilities | -885 |
| Operating cash: subtotal | 115,800 |
| Property purchases | -69,691 |
| Finance-lease principal | -2,524 |
| Issuer-defined free cash flow | 43,585 |
Share compensation and deferred tax reconcile earnings to cash; neither establishes a permanent improvement in the economic margin. Retain dilution in the equity bridge and a tax-payment schedule in the cash forecast. Operating-balance movements also need to follow the infrastructure and advertising case rather than being treated as a fixed percentage plug.
The later quarter shows why the investment definition matters:
| Measure | Quarterly amount |
|---|---|
| Operating cash | 32,786 |
| Property payments | (33,942) |
| Finance-lease principal | (964) |
| Issuer non-GAAP free cash flow | (2,120) |
Property payments and lease principal are separate cash deductions in this issuer definition. A finance-lease convention in an enterprise valuation must remain consistent with the associated debt-like claim; counting the same cost through cash and again through a full unadjusted claim would distort value.
Test a rephasing of capacity payments, not free investment
Illustration: defer 10% of the FY2025 property-payment basis to a later period, holding current operating cash and lease principal fixed. This tests payment timing only; it does not assume capacity can be reduced without affecting future operations.
| Measure | Historical basis | Current-period illustration |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash | 115,800 | 115,800 |
| Property payments | 69,691 | 62,721.9 |
| Lease principal | 2,524 | 2,524 |
| Cash after both deductions | 43,585 | 50,554.1 |
The current-period cash increase is $6,969.1 million and the assumed deferred payment remains due later. Reconcile delayed capacity, future depreciation, utilization and the later cash outflow before discounting the case. The timing benefit is not a perpetual increase in free cash flow.
Keep interim reporting separate from the annual basis
Q3 2026 covers 2026-07-01 through 2026-09-30 and was released 2026-10-21. Revenue was $64,601 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 2026 results.
The quarterly cash and legal-charge figures above belong to this reporting date. They are not retroactive changes to FY2025. Keep legal-payment timing separate from infrastructure funding and do not annualize the quarterly deficit into a complete-year cash forecast.
Turn the financial basis into a DCF case
| Decision | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Separate impressions, realized ad price, paid service adoption and currency assumptions. |
| Operating costs | Retain research, moderation/support and infrastructure operating expense required by the case. |
| Investment | Schedule property cash and lease principal consistently with commissioning and the chosen lease convention. |
| Tax and legal cash | Distinguish reported provisions, deferred tax and actual payment dates; count each claim once. |
| Equity bridge | Match the cash stream to its discount rate, then reconcile dated net claims and dilution. |
For enterprise cash, begin with operating earnings after explicit operating tax assumptions and reconcile non-cash allocations, operating funding and reinvestment. The reported operating-cash starting point instead requires financing and tax adjustments. A terminal advertising margin is only useful when supported by the continuing infrastructure and product investment assumed to sustain it.
The Meta Platforms company analysis explains the wider operating context. Use the company forecast tool and DCF calculator with explicit assumptions. Use the historical financials to define an explicit operating and reinvestment case, then supply valuation-date capital costs, claims and diluted shares. Check that each cash claim is counted once before deriving a per-share value.
