Meta: Advertising Growth, Legal Charge and Investment Cash
Meta Q3 2026 revenue grew 26.1%, while GAAP operating income fell amid a $9.89 billion legal charge. Separate that expense from settlement payments and investment cash.
Meta's Q3 2026 revenue grew 26.1% to $64.6 billion, but GAAP operating income fell to $13.0 billion as expenses included a $9.89 billion legal charge. Separately, property purchases and finance-lease principal exceeded operating cash by $2.1 billion. Advertising growth, recognized legal expense and investment cash therefore need distinct interpretations.

Q3 2026 covers 2026-07-01 through 2026-09-30 and was released 2026-10-21. Revenue was $64,601 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 2026 results.
The latest quarter's legal charge, the maximum payments under the agreement and actual settlement cash are different amounts. The annual operating-cash chart is before property purchases and finance-lease principal; it is not the free-cash-flow definition in the quarterly table.
Full-year operating cash flow (reported)
One scale starts at zero. Exact period ends, definitions and sources accompany the table below.
| Fiscal year | Period ended | $ millions |
|---|---|---|
| FY2024 | 2024-12-31 | 91,328 |
| FY2025 | 2025-12-31 | 115,800 |
Reported consolidated operating cash, before investing and financing. A larger operating-cash bar is not free cash after every investment or claim. Finance-lease principal is outside this operating-cash chart and is included in Meta's separate issuer free-cash-flow definition. Source: FY2025 annual report and comparative statements.
Complete annual operating and cash basis
The complete annual comparison uses the FY2025 annual filing, filed 2026-01-29. Periods ended 2024-12-31 and 2025-12-31; amounts are $ millions. Filing date, fiscal-year label and period end are separate dates.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, reported | 164,501 | 200,966 |
| Operating income, reported | 69,380 | 83,276 |
| Operating cash flow, reported | 91,328 | 115,800 |
| Property purchases / capex, cash outflow | 37,256 | 69,691 |
| Operating cash less displayed capex, derived | 54,072 | 46,109 |
FY2025 revenue grew 22.2% to $200.966 billion and operating income was $83.276 billion. Operating cash rose 26.8% to $115.800 billion. Property purchases of $69.691 billion exclude finance-lease principal, so their direct subtraction is not Meta's lease-inclusive free-cash-flow definition. The later quarterly legal charge is not retroactively inserted into this annual period.

Advertising supplies nearly all revenue
| Revenue | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Advertising, within Family of Apps | 50,082 | 63,061 |
| Other Family of Apps revenue | 690 | 1,097 |
| Reality Labs | 470 | 443 |
| Total revenue | 51,242 | 64,601 |
The release reports ad impressions up 10% and average price per ad up 14%. Multiplying the rounded factors gives 1.10 × 1.14 - 1 = 25.4%, close to the 25.9% increase calculated from reported advertising revenue. The comparison shows the contribution of activity and monetization; rounded drivers are not an exact reconstruction of revenue.
A legal charge materially affected reported operating profit
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| GAAP operating income, $ millions | 20,535 | 12,988 |
| Reported operating margin | 40% | 20% |
Q3 2026 expenses included a $9.89 billion charge related to the agreement with U.S. state attorneys general over teen mental-health and social-media litigation. The recognized charge is material to the profit comparison. The agreement provides for payments of up to approximately $18.59 billion; that maximum is not cash paid in this quarter. Expense recognition and settlement payments can fall on different dates. Neither the charge nor the maximum payment amount is used here to infer quarterly settlement cash, and no automatic recurring-cost exclusion or cash-flow add-back is assumed.
Higher investment reversed the free-cash-flow result
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | 29,999 | 32,786 |
| Property/equipment purchases, outflow | 18,829 | 33,942 |
| Finance-lease principal, outflow | 545 | 964 |
| Issuer non-GAAP free cash flow | 10,625 | (2,120) |
The calculation is 32,786 - 33,942 - 964 = -$2,120 million. The combined investment deduction increased $15,532 million, while operating cash increased $2,787 million. That explains the $12,745 million deterioration in free cash flow. The quarterly result does not itself measure the future return on the installed infrastructure.
A DCF needs both an advertising case and an investment case
As a hypothetical operating sensitivity, reduce reported Q3 2026 advertising revenue by 1% and hold operating costs unchanged. Operating profit would fall $630.6 million before tax. Actual cost responses could change that result; this is an assumed sensitivity rather than a forecast of ad pricing.
The forecast also needs a dated path for infrastructure spending and the revenue or efficiency benefits expected from it. A model with stronger ad revenue but permanently rising capital intensity can still generate less cash. Illustrative WACC inputs of 8% and 10%, and perpetual growth of 2% and 3%, belong in a separate DCF sensitivity. An enterprise forecast must reconcile operating taxes, working capital and all relevant reinvestment to an unlevered cash-flow definition.
What customers pay for and what changes the economics
Meta's Family of Apps sells advertising placements to marketers across its apps. Other payments include WhatsApp paid messaging, Meta Verified subscriptions and developer payment fees. Reality Labs sells hardware, software and content, including Quest and AI glasses. The FY2025 filing says advertising supplies substantially all revenue and that Reality Labs includes long-duration research. A large audience is consequently not equivalent to an equally diversified set of paying customers. (FY2025 source.)
Analysis: Decompose an advertising improvement into useful user attention, available inventory and advertiser willingness to pay. Increasing ad load may help near-term sales but can weaken the user experience that supports future inventory. For messaging or wearables, require paid adoption and delivery economics; do not value every engaged user as though they already produce the mature advertising contribution.
Operating signals to carry into the forecast
Watch these signals on a consistent period and definition. Undisclosed measures remain questions to investigate, rather than supplied KPI data.
- Ad impressions and price per ad: retain the rounded-driver limits above.
- Engagement and advertiser-outcome evidence: test whether inventory remains useful as monetization rises.
- Non-ad paid adoption: distinguish a new payment engine from audience or hardware shipment counts.
- Family of Apps contribution versus Reality Labs and infrastructure spending: assess whether mature cash funds the assumed experiments.
SWOT and the forecast consequence
SWOT classifications and forecast consequences are analytical judgments; evidence uses the dated sources cited below.
| Assessment | Evidence | Conditional forecast consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Family of Apps connects several widely used services with a common advertising business. (FY2025 source.) | Cross-app reach can support advertiser demand, but avoid summing users as unique incremental customers. |
| Weakness | Revenue remains heavily concentrated in advertising. (FY2025 source.) | An advertiser-budget or monetization shock deserves a direct cash stress even when other offerings grow. |
| Opportunity | Paid messaging, subscriptions and AI glasses create additional monetization paths. (FY2025 source.) | An upside needs paying demand and sustainable unit economics before receiving mature-platform margins. |
| Threat | The report identifies substantial AI and Reality Labs spending with uncertain long-term success. (FY2025 source.) | Test a delayed revenue payoff while the expense and infrastructure program continues. |
Valuation implication: Compare higher ad contribution after serving costs with growth that requires continually heavier capital and research spending. Smaller payment engines can add optionality, but need their own cost and adoption cases. Preserve the legal-payment and finance-lease cash boundaries when discounting the resulting stream.
These are selected historical results and explicit assumptions, not a live valuation, app-level profitability estimate or share-price target. A completed forecast or verified workbook calculation is not supplied by this analysis.
