Meal Prep Plan: How Many Extra Orders Must a Broader Menu Win?
Choose menu breadth from paid delivered contribution after all prepared output and changeover cost.
On this page

More menu choice is worthwhile only if the added delivered contribution exceeds extra preparation, unsold production and changeover work. Treat a retention improvement as a hypothesis until paid cohorts demonstrate it.
Keep one consistent bundle unit
Original assumptions, $ per week. One bundle is one delivered order-equivalent; its meal contents stay unchanged. Price is $60 per paid delivered bundle. Every prepared bundle costs $25, including those not sold; packing and delivery cost $8 per delivered bundle. The limited menu prepares 80 and sells 70 with $1,400 other commitments. The broad menu prepares 100, sells 90 and adds $400 of planning/changeover cost. Delivery capacity is 90 bundles.
| Measure | Limited | Broad |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared / paid delivered | 80 /70 | 100 /90 |
| Sales | 4,200 | 5,400 |
| All production cost | 2,000 | 2,500 |
| Packing and delivery | 560 | 720 |
| Other commitments | 1,400 | 1,800 |
| Selected result | 240 | 380 |
Twenty more paid orders add $1,200 sales but only $140 result. The ten unsold broad-menu bundles already cost $250 inside production; do not add them again as a separate waste deduction.
Beating the old menu takes 88 paid orders
With 100 bundles prepared, broad-menu result is 52 × paid deliveries -4,300. It becomes positive at 83 whole deliveries, but matching the limited menu's $240 requires 88. At 87 it leaves $224, below the old plan; at 88 it leaves $276. A profitable alternative is not necessarily the better alternative.
The 90-order plan uses all assumed delivery capacity. Three lost paid orders reduce its result to $224 and remove the advantage. Different prepared quantities, batch yields or delivery steps need their own case rather than the same average margin.
Fund the production before collection
Assume production is paid two days before customer fees and fees arrive before dispatch. The broader menu requires $2,500 production funding first, compared with $2,000 for the limited menu. Other commitments and packing dates must then be added to find complete weekly cash.
Use actual paid renewals, skips, waste and timed changeovers to choose the menu. The Meal Prep Financial Model connects acquisition, subscriptions, pricing and costs in the wider forecast.
Scope & limitations
Assumed bundle-level weekly cases, not individual meals or evidence that variety improves retention. Food safety and service claims require separate review.
