Hydroponic Farm Plan: Compare Crop Cash Over the Same Area and Time
Compare crop choices using saleable output, occupied area-time and the cash through harvest.
On this page

A crop comparison must use the same area and planning horizon. Contribution per harvest can favor a slow crop, while an unrealistically empty turnaround calendar can make a fast crop look better than it can actually deliver.
Compare the same 80 square metres over eight weeks
Original assumptions, $. Crop A uses 80 square metres for four weeks and produces 108 saleable kilograms at $8. Inputs cost $250, labor $200, energy $150 and packing $0.50 per kilogram. Crop B uses the same area for eight weeks, producing 200 saleable kilograms at $8 with costs $400 inputs, $400 labor, $300 energy and $0.50 packing. All selected costs are paid before each cycle and receipts arrive at harvest.
| Measure | A | B |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue per harvest | 864 | 1,600 |
| Selected cost per cycle | 654 | 1,200 |
| Contribution per harvest | 210 | 400 |
| Completed contribution over 8 weeks | 420 from 2 harvests | 400 from 1 |
The initial $20 advantage for A depends on starting the second cycle immediately. It is not a crop recommendation or a verified yield.
Add the turnaround before spending on the next cycle
Now assume A needs one week between cycles. Its first harvest remains in week 4, but the next cycle starts in week 5 and harvests in week 9. At the end of week 8, only one harvest has been collected. If the second $654 cycle is already paid in week 5, cumulative selected cash is $864 -2 ×$654 =negative $444, with the second crop still in progress.
B's first harvest collects $1,600 against $1,200 cost in week 8, leaving $400. This finite-window cash comparison differs from completed-harvest contribution; the unfinished A crop has not disappeared. Repeated production needs each crop's actual turnaround and resource calendar.
Use measured saleable grades, qualified propagation/growing schedules, actual energy quotes and buyers' delivery terms. Keep kilograms, plants, trays and area units consistent and cost unsold output. The Hydroponic Farm Financial Model connects cultivation area, crop allocations, harvest calendars, yields/loss and prices in a broader forecast.
Scope & limitations
Original cropA/B arithmetic only, not agronomic yield, cycle, price or crop advice. Technical feasibility and actual harvest/sales calendars require qualified evidence.
