Dog Grooming Plan: Will the Discount Fill Gaps or Replace Full-Price Visits?
Offer a grooming discount only where extra appointments add contribution within safe usable capacity.
On this page

A grooming offer should fill appointment gaps that can safely accommodate the service. Discounting visits that would sell at full price can erase the contribution from the new bookings.
Compare the full-price diary with genuinely extra appointments
Original assumptions, $ per week. Twenty-four appointments already sell at $65. Direct labor and products cost $25 per appointment; separate standing costs are $600 and exclude that labor. Each appointment uses 1.5 groomer-hours including preparation and cleaning. Forty-two usable hours allow at most 28 comparable appointments under the assumed safe service plan.
| Measure | 24 full-price visits | Plus 4 new $55 visits | All 28 at $55 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | 1,560 | 1,780 | 1,540 |
| Direct costs | 600 | 700 | 700 |
| Standing costs | 600 | 600 | 600 |
| Selected result | 360 | 480 | 240 |
The four new discounted visits add $120: 4 × (55 - 25). Applying the $10 discount to the original 24 visits gives away $240, leaving the whole-diary offer $120 worse than doing no offer. The same 28 appointments can therefore produce very different results.
Capacity depends on the service that fills the gap
Twenty-four visits use 36 hours; four new visits use the remaining six. A two-hour service cannot be inserted into a 1.5-hour gap merely because the daily appointment count looks low. Use the actual service, coat needs, cleaning and handoff time confirmed by the operator; do not shorten safe delivery assumptions to hit the sales target.
Prepaid cash still owes a service
If the four new visits are paid at booking, $220 is received before delivery but $100 of selected direct costs remains to be paid. Refund obligations or different compensation dates change that cash position. Keep the appointments owed in the capacity calendar rather than treating prepayments as free expansion cash.
Check realized rebooking, which full-price visits would be displaced and whether the discount applies only to genuinely spare periods. The Dog Grooming Financial Model connects visits, service mix, pricing, staffing and investment to the wider salon forecast.
