Eli Lilly: Product Concentration, Capacity and Cash

Mounjaro and Zepbound were 56.0% of Lilly's FY2025 revenue. Cash after property purchases was $8.972 billion before other investment and financing.

Eli Lilly DCF Analysis

Mounjaro and Zepbound supplied $36.507 billion, or 56.0%, of Eli Lilly's FY2025 revenue. Operating cash was $16.813 billion, with $7.841 billion spent on property and equipment, leaving a derived $8.972 billion. Concentrated product demand and the manufacturing program therefore belong in the same cash case, alongside research and acquisition funding.

Q2 2026 covers 2026-04-01 through 2026-06-30 and was released 2026-08-05. Revenue was $22,974 million in this quarter. Source: official Q2 2026 results.

The later quarter includes acquired in-process research charges. Product concentration and supply-capacity investment require separate cases, and ordinary research payments already within operating cash cannot automatically be deducted again.

A pharmaceutical portfolio that must fund supply and its next products

Lilly develops, manufactures and markets human pharmaceutical products. The cited filing treats it as a single business segment; the named medicines in the table are product revenue disclosures rather than separate manufacturing or cash-flow businesses.

The two named medicines supplied 56.0% of the disclosed revenue base, while the $7,841 million property program also claimed cash. That connects concentration to supply funding: capacity and inventory must support the assumed demand, and the group must still fund research and portfolio renewal. Routine research cash is already reflected in operating cash; separately reported acquired-research and acquisition payments, and future development needs, require their own funding case.

Measure the historical concentration in one period

The FY2025 Form 10-K filed February 12, 2026 provides the following figures for the year ended December 31, 2025. They are consolidated $ millions, rounded as presented in the filing. Product revenue is a different reporting level from the consolidated cash-flow measures.

Lilly FY2025 product concentration and selected cash measures, $ millions
MeasureAmountBoundary
Mounjaro revenue22,965Reported worldwide product revenue
Zepbound revenue13,542Reported worldwide product revenue
Total revenue65,179Reported consolidated annual revenue
Operating cash flow16,813Reported consolidated inflow
Property and equipment purchases(7,841)Reported investing cash outflow
Operating cash less these purchases8,972Derived: 16,813 - 7,841

The two product rows sum to $36,507 million and represent 56.0% of reported revenue: (22,965 + 13,542) / 65,179, rounded to one decimal place. This is a concentration indicator using the annual revenue denominator. It is not a product cash margin, a measure of market share or a forecast of the next year's demand.

Connect sales growth to usable capacity

Prepare the production case separately from the commercial case. Identify the capacity needed for your assumed units, the timing of commissioning and qualification, and the inventory required before sales are collected. A facility announcement or cash construction payment does not by itself establish saleable output in the same period.

One analyst scenario can delay the availability of capacity while holding committed spending in place. Another can assume that production ramps before customer collections and test the inventory funding required. State the demand, realized net price and supply assumptions explicitly; do not turn an assumed margin improvement into a reported fact.

Physical capital spending is not all investment

The annual cash-flow statement separately identifies purchases of in-process research and development and cash paid for acquisitions. The $8,972 million residual above therefore is not cash after every investment. A valuation case relying on acquired research or new product rights must identify the related spending rather than describe pipeline growth as costless.

Distinguish the cash paid to acquire a program from the accounting expense or asset recorded for it. Then specify the research and commercial spending still required by your case. Removing an acquired-research charge from an earnings measure does not establish that the associated payment or future development work can be ignored in cash valuation.

Keep product-life and legal uncertainty explicit

The filing includes patent-risk discussion and product-liability proceedings involving Mounjaro, Trulicity and Zepbound. Those disclosures do not supply a certain expiry-driven revenue path or a cash damages estimate for this analysis. Keep a product-life sensitivity and any legal-payment assumption identifiable rather than silently assigning a guaranteed outcome to an unresolved matter.

For concentration testing, ask how much of the cash case depends on the same commercial sensitivities. Two brand rows should not be assumed to provide independent protection simply because the table lists them separately. Define any shared price, demand or supply shock as an analyst scenario, then trace the effect through research spending, inventory, taxes and investment.

Update the perimeter before applying the method today

Lilly's August 5, 2026 second-quarter release describes completed acquisitions including Orna, Ajax, Centessa and Kelonia. Those later transactions are outside the FY2025 table. A valuation at a later date needs a dated transaction and funding reconciliation before using the historical residual as its starting point.

What customers pay for and what changes the economics

Lilly sells human medicines, with Mounjaro and Zepbound already identified above as major product contributors. The FY2025 revenue policy starts from contractual invoice prices, then estimates rebates, discounts and returns as reductions of revenue. US programs include managed care, Medicare, Medicaid, chargebacks and patient assistance. Patient demand, payer coverage, the invoice and the final realized net price are consequently different parts of the revenue engine. (FY2025 source.)

Analysis: A broader access agreement can raise treated volume while lowering net revenue per treatment. That may still improve contribution if capacity and delivery costs support the additional units. Test the commercial and manufacturing cases together: a strong prescription story cannot fund the expansion if the assumed net price ignores concessions or the factory ramp fails to produce saleable supply.

Operating signals to carry into the forecast

Watch these signals on a consistent period and definition. Undisclosed measures remain questions to investigate, rather than supplied KPI data.

  • Product revenue versus volume/net-price commentary: avoid using list price as the realized price.
  • Payer access and rebate estimates: check whether volume gains compensate for concessions.
  • Usable supply and inventory: distinguish construction spending from qualified commercial output.
  • Research and transaction funding: include the continuing work and purchased programs needed beyond the leading franchises.

SWOT and the forecast consequence

SWOT classifications and forecast consequences are analytical judgments; evidence uses the dated sources cited below.

AssessmentEvidenceConditional forecast consequence
StrengthThe leading products generate substantial revenue within a broader medicine portfolio. (FY2025 source.)Strong demand can fund development if net pricing and supply allow; retain concentration stresses rather than assuming automatic diversification.
WeaknessRevenue depends on estimates for rebates, discounts and returns. (FY2025 source.)A gross-to-net revision can change reported sales without matching new demand; separate estimate effects from underlying growth.
OpportunityExpanded reimbursement can increase eligible patient access. (FY2025 source.)A higher-volume case must include the accompanying net-price and capacity assumptions.
ThreatThe existing product concentration shares commercial and supply sensitivities. (FY2025 source.)Stress a common access or supply shock across the leading brands instead of treating their sales as independent protections.

Valuation implication: The key sensitivity is profitable, supplied treatment volume after concessions and expansion spending. Compare greater access at lower net price with a supply-constrained case; neither can be represented by an unchanged historical product margin. Preserve the explicit acquired-research, legal and post-FY transaction boundaries above.
