Uber DCF Analysis
Uber’s DCF needs to separate marketplace operating earnings from bookings, tax benefits and cash reserved for future claims. Recognized revenue depends on the contract’s gross or net presentation, while driver economics and insurance payments determine part of the funding requirement. The annual bridge below connects those populations before an assumed marketplace cash stream is valued.

| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 43,978 | 52,017 |
| Cost of revenue excluding D&A | 26,651 | 31,338 |
| Operations / support | 2,732 | 2,854 |
| Sales / marketing | 4,337 | 4,898 |
| R&D | 3,109 | 3,402 |
| General / administrative | 3,639 | 3,241 |
| Depreciation / amortization | 711 | 719 |
| Operating income | 2,799 | 5,565 |
| Consolidated net income | 9,845 | 10,093 |
| Parent-attributable net income | 9,856 | 10,053 |
| Operating margin: derived | 6.4% | 10.7% |
Operating income is well below net income in both periods because the tax line includes a benefit. That benefit is not an operating margin earned on trips. A forward cash-tax case needs a dated explanation of usable tax attributes, taxable earnings and payment timing rather than a permanent negative tax rate.
Principal-versus-agent presentation changes which provider payments appear in revenue and cost. Compare retained operating contribution on a consistent contract basis. Gross Bookings describes marketplace activity; it is not another revenue pool or a denominator that automatically converts a reported revenue margin into an economic take rate.
Separate segment revenue from adjusted earnings measures
The annual segment tables report the following revenues and Adjusted EBITDA. The adjusted measure excludes items that must still be reconciled before a group DCF cash stream is selected.
| Population | Revenue | Adjusted EBITDA |
|---|---|---|
| Mobility | 29,670 | 7,899 |
| Delivery | 17,248 | 3,572 |
| Freight | 5,099 | -33 |
| Corporate G&A / platform R&D | Not a separate revenue pool | -2,708 |
| Consolidated | 52,017 | 8,730 |
Do not add segment adjusted earnings and then omit corporate technology and support. The adjusted consolidated total is also not GAAP operating income. Model incentives, insurance, payments processing and other delivery costs consistently with the trips and merchant relationships assumed to produce the revenue.
Trace earnings into cash and reinvestment
Reconciliation source: annual earnings and cash-flow statements. Subtotals below are checkpoints, not extra amounts to add. Grouped adjustments are calculated from the disclosed cash-flow lines.
| Step | FY2025 |
|---|---|
| Operating income | 5,565 |
| Net interest income less expense | 303 |
| Other expense | -68 |
| Income tax benefit | 4,346 |
| Equity-method losses | -53 |
| Consolidated net income: subtotal | 10,093 |
| Cash-statement depreciation / amortization | 747 |
| Share-based compensation | 1,826 |
| Deferred tax adjustment | -4,779 |
| Other reconciliation adjustments | -15 |
| Insurance reserve change | 2,660 |
| Other operating asset / liability changes | -433 |
| Operating cash: subtotal | 10,099 |
| Property / equipment purchases | -336 |
| Cash after these purchases | 9,763 |
The deferred-tax adjustment removes a major non-cash part of the earnings tax benefit. Other reconciliation combines debt-security discount accretion, unrealized security and currency movements and other adjustments. Cash-statement depreciation has a different allocation scope from the operating-expense line, so it should not be replaced by that smaller line.
The insurance reserve increase is already within operating cash and carries future claim-payment exposure. It is not a second free add-back. Other operating balances include receivables, prepayments, payables and leases; their combined change cannot be treated as a permanent marketplace cash margin. Share compensation still needs a dilution or replacement-cost policy, and restricted insurance assets are not automatically surplus common cash.
Stress claim cash timing while holding current earnings fixed
Illustration: assume $500 million of additional insurance claim payments in the period against existing reserves, with current earnings and all other cash movements fixed. This isolates payment timing; it asserts neither a reserve deficiency nor a new loss estimate.
| Measure | Historical basis | Illustrative case |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash | 10,099 | 9,599 |
| Property / equipment purchases | 336 | 336 |
| Cash after these purchases | 9,763 | 9,263 |
The $500 million cash reduction also reduces the unpaid reserve under this assumption. It should not be charged again as a newly recognized operating loss. A multi-year claims schedule must keep expense recognition, reserve balances, restricted funding and actual payments consistent rather than perpetually extrapolating the cash benefit of reserve growth.
Keep interim reporting separate from the annual basis
Q2 2026 covers 2026-04-01 through 2026-06-30 and was released 2026-08-05. Revenue was $14,191 million in this quarter. Source: official Q2 2026 results.
The later quarter identifies business-model changes affecting reported revenue growth. Keep that contract comparability issue separate from the annual cost and cash basis. Rolling the model forward requires current collections, provider payments and claim funding, not merely annualizing the newer revenue line.
Turn the financial basis into a DCF case
| Decision | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Revenue | Keep bookings, gross/net revenue and retained contribution on explicit populations. |
| Operating cost | Fund provider supply, incentives, insurance, payments and platform support consistent with activity. |
| Tax | Separate accounting tax benefits from the timing and amount of usable cash-tax attributes. |
| Claims cash | Roll forward reserves, claim payments and restricted funding without double counting. |
| Equity value | Reconcile financing, unrestricted cash, investments, ownership claims and dilution at the valuation date. |
A conventional enterprise case uses operating profit after an explicit operating tax assumption and funds reinvestment and operating liabilities on a sustainable basis. Starting from reported CFO requires a tax, interest and claims-funding reconciliation. Terminal cash should not depend on ever-accelerating reserve accumulation, a repeated tax-valuation release or an unchanged gross/net presentation despite changing contracts.
The Uber company analysis explains the wider operating context. Use the company forecast tool and DCF calculator with explicit assumptions. Use the historical financials to define an explicit operating and reinvestment case, then supply valuation-date capital costs, claims and diluted shares. Check that each cash claim is counted once before deriving a per-share value.
