AbbVie DCF Analysis
AbbVie's DCF needs separate paths for product sales, portfolio renewal and claims on cash. Reported operating earnings, accounting profit and cash after property purchases answer different questions. The tables below connect them before any growth rate, operating tax assumption or discount rate is chosen.
Two full years of sales, costs and profit
Amounts are $ millions for years ended December 31. The FY2025 Form 10-K supplies the reported rows; percentage rows are calculations. Gross margin means revenue less product costs, divided by revenue. It does not deduct research or selling costs.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 56,334 | 61,160 |
| Products sold: cost | 16,904 | 18,204 |
| SG&A | 14,752 | 14,010 |
| R&D | 12,791 | 9,096 |
| Acquired research / milestones | 2,757 | 5,016 |
| Other operating income: negative cost | -7 | -241 |
| Operating earnings | 9,137 | 15,075 |
| Profit attributable to AbbVie | 4,278 | 4,226 |
| Gross margin: derived | 70.0% | 70.2% |
| Operating margin: derived | 16.2% | 24.6% |
| Attributable profit / revenue: derived | 7.6% | 6.9% |
Keep research and selling costs outside gross profit when building operating earnings. Acquired research can be lumpy: excluding it to show a smoother margin is an analytical choice that needs a matching renewal-investment policy. Otherwise the forecast retains the benefit of purchased products while dropping their economic cost.
A sales-led forecast should separate prescription volume, realized net price and product mix. Expense ratios can then follow the work needed to sustain that portfolio. A uniform margin imposed on every therapy would conceal different launch spending, competitive exposure and remaining product lives. The AbbVie company analysis develops those operating questions; this page focuses on the numerical cash bridge.
Which product cash streams support the group forecast?
The annual results release presents the selected worldwide immunology revenues below; its product table is unaudited. This is a portfolio grouping, not a separately reported cash-flow segment.
| Product or grouping | Revenue |
|---|---|
| Skyrizi | 17,562 |
| Rinvoq | 8,304 |
| Humira | 4,540 |
| Immunology subtotal | 30,406 |
| Rest of consolidated revenue: derived | 30,754 |
Use a distinct trajectory for legacy erosion and replacement-product uptake, then test the net-price assumptions supporting each trajectory. The residual row covers the remaining businesses collectively; it is not a claim that they earn one common margin. Link product-level revenue assumptions to research, selling support and associated commitments before aggregating cash.
Reconcile operating earnings to actual cash
The next table reconciles annual statements, pages 52 and 56. Subtotal rows are checkpoints, not additional amounts to add. Grouped adjustments are derived from the filing's individual cash-flow lines.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Operating earnings | 15,075 |
| Interest / FX / other expense / tax | -10,842 |
| Consolidated net earnings: subtotal | 4,233 |
| Depreciation + amortization | 8,139 |
| Contingent remeasurement less payment | 3,630 |
| Acquired research adjustment | 5,016 |
| Other reconciliation adjustments | 374 |
| Operating assets / liabilities / tax balances | -2,362 |
| Operating cash: subtotal | 19,030 |
| Property purchases | -1,214 |
| After property purchases: derived | 17,816 |
Other reconciliation adjustments combine deferred tax, stock compensation, litigation adjustments net of payments, impairment and the filing's other line. Operating-balance changes combine receivables, inventories, prepaid assets, payables and tax balances. These groups explain the historical reconciliation; they are not permanent forecast add-backs.
The acquired-research adjustment removes an accounting expense from operating cash presentation, so trace its investing cash separately. The statement also reports $5,237 million of other acquisitions and investments. That category is broader than the expense line: subtracting one and adding back the other without a transaction schedule would not establish normalized free cash flow.
Contingent remeasurement and settlement must remain separate. The bridge already reflects the operating payment. A forecast that includes future settlements must not also deduct the same obligation in full from enterprise value. Conversely, removing a non-cash remeasurement from earnings does not remove the future economic claim.
Keep the later quarter and acquisition perimeter separate
In Q2 2026 (April 1–June 30), revenue was $16,990 million; the results were released on July 31, as reported in the quarterly filing. This quarter is separate from the complete annual periods above; multiplying it by four would not establish a complete-year result.
The September 3, 2026 Apogee closing announcement also postdates the annual baseline. For a valuation after that transaction, reconcile the acquired operating perimeter, funding and remaining development investment at the valuation date. Adding assumed product benefits without the related funding and renewal cash would overstate the case.
Bridge enterprise cash to the shareholder claim
The following annual balance-sheet amounts are dated December 31, 2025. The share figure is a full-year weighted average, not a current diluted share count. Sources: annual balance sheet, earnings statement and contingent-consideration note.
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Cash | 5,229 |
| Borrowings + debt + finance leases | 67,496 |
| Debt and leases less cash: derived | 62,267 |
| Contingent consideration liability | 25,374 |
| FY2025 weighted-average diluted shares, millions | 1,773 |
Define which cash is available and whether leases belong in the chosen enterprise-value convention. The displayed net amount deducts cash only, with no assumption that every investment or cash balance is distributable. Separately schedule non-debt claims and noncontrolling interests where material. Use a valuation-date diluted-share reconciliation before deriving any per-share result.
What a margin sensitivity can and cannot establish
Illustration, not guidance: hold annual revenue at its FY2025 level and change operating margin by one percentage point. This moves operating earnings by $611.6 million. The cases below change no tax, working-capital, investment or financing assumption.
| Case | Revenue held fixed | Operating earnings |
|---|---|---|
| One percentage point lower | 61,160 | 14,463.4 |
| Historical operating basis | 61,160 | 15,075 |
| One percentage point higher | 61,160 | 15,686.6 |
These are pre-tax operating changes, not equal changes in cash or shareholder value. A stronger volume case may require more receivables and launch investment; a rebate-pressure case can reduce realized price without proportionately reducing research. Carry those consequences through the cash schedule before discounting either case.
Construct the cash stream before choosing a discount rate
| Input | Required treatment |
|---|---|
| Operating earnings | Forecast product economics, ordinary research and selling costs; document any normalization. |
| Operating tax | Apply an explicit operating tax assumption; do not treat one reported effective rate as permanent. |
| Non-cash allocations | Reconcile depreciation, amortization and other adjustments without erasing the cost of renewal. |
| Investment and working capital | Deduct reinvestment and operating-balance changes; schedule purchased development and settlements once. |
| Terminal cash | Retain the reinvestment needed by the mature product case; test product life and net price together. |
| Discounting and equity bridge | Match enterprise cash to WACC or equity cash to an equity rate, then reconcile dated claims and dilution. |
A conventional enterprise cash bridge begins with operating earnings after assumed operating tax, adds appropriate non-cash allocations and subtracts reinvestment and changes in operating working capital. AbbVie's portfolio purchases and contingent arrangements require explicit treatment alongside that bridge. Starting from reported operating cash instead requires a separate financing and tax reconciliation before calling the result unlevered cash.
The company forecast tool and DCF calculator can support an explicitly stated analytical case. Use the historical financials to define an explicit operating and reinvestment case, then supply valuation-date capital costs, claims and diluted shares. Check that each cash claim is counted once before deriving a per-share value. The purpose is to make each assumption traceable to a financial base and each cash claim count once.
