Pet Supply Store Plan: Choose the Order Size the Cash Calendar Can Fund

Choose pet supply replenishment by actual cash due, supplier quantity and complete unit economics.

The cheapest unit quote is not always a fundable order. Compare the supplier quantity and payment date with available cash and actual stock needs, then show the margin sacrificed by choosing a smaller batch.

Contribution does not recover the whole purchase

Original assumptions, $. Buy 40 identical packaged items at $18 and pay $720 before sales. Each sells for $30; selected monthly commitments are $300. At 25 sales, contribution after sold-unit cost is $300, exactly covering the commitment. Cash movement is negative $270 because fifteen units still hold $270 of purchase cost.

Recovering $720 plus $300 in payments instead needs 34 whole $30 sales. This is a stock-cycle cash threshold, not evidence 34 units will sell before the next order is due.

Compare the next quotes on the actual due date

Assume opening cash $800. After paying the initial $720, collecting 25 sales and paying $300 commitments, cash is $530. Two actual-style quote scenarios are considered below, before any further receipts; the quantities and prices are original assumptions.

Assumed next-order choice, $
Measure30 units at 1820 units at 19
Payment due now540380
Cash after payment-10150
Contribution per later $30 sale before other costs1211

The smaller order preserves $160 of immediate cash but pays a $1 premium on each of its twenty units. That $20 premium is a cost, not a reason to ignore the larger order's funding shortfall. Whether twenty new units plus the fifteen remaining are enough depends on demand and lead time.

Set a stock and cash trigger together

Reconcile actual received, sold, refunded and usable stock by product group. Use documented rotation constraints where relevant; do not assume unlike pack sizes are interchangeable. Put the next supplier minimum, due date and likely receipts on one calendar. Any credit or return right needs its actual terms.

The Pet Supply Store Financial Model builds traffic, conversion, repeat orders, category prices and operating costs into the broader retail forecast.

Scope & limitations

One assumed packaged-item group; no health guidance, shelf-life or demand benchmark. Actual credit, return and rotation terms require evidence.
