Hair Salon Plan: Price the Service Mix Against Stylist Hours
Choose a feasible salon service mix using complete stylist time and contribution per constrained hour.
On this page

More expensive salon services do not necessarily contribute more per stylist-hour. Build the mix from complete service and reset time, then compare contribution against the staffed hours actually available.
Use contribution per constrained hour
Original assumptions, $. A haircut sells for $65, consumes $10 of product and takes one stylist-hour including reset. A color service sells for $120, consumes $35 and takes three complete stylist-hours. Staffing and other operating commitments are fixed at $4,500 per month and exclude these consumables; fees, tax, finance and equipment are outside the case.
The haircut contributes $55 per hour. Color contributes $85 per appointment but only $28.33 per hour. That does not mean replacing color clients is automatically the right offer: actual demand, skills and customer needs constrain what can be sold. It does show why an appointment count or average ticket alone cannot establish the financial capacity of the diary.
A small duration change removes six monthly color appointments
| Measure | 3-hour color | 3.5-hour color |
|---|---|---|
| Haircuts | 40 | 40 |
| Color appointments that fit | 40 | 34 |
| Stylist-hours used | 160 | 159 |
| Sales | 7,400 | 6,680 |
| Consumables | 1,800 | 1,590 |
| Result after commitments | 1,100 | 590 |
With forty haircut hours reserved, the longer color slot permits floor((160 - 40) / 3.5) = 34 appointments. The original forty would need 180 total hours. Six fewer color appointments remove $510 of contribution; the remaining one-hour fragment is not another color slot.
Convert the feasible mix into a cash plan
Time completed services and cleaning rather than only the booked treatment. Distinguish stylist availability from chairs: another chair does not create another qualified worker. If compensation is commission-based or overtime starts, recost the mix instead of retaining the fixed-roster assumption.
Product consumed during service differs from stock purchased in advance. Put supplier, payroll and equipment payments beside actual appointment receipts and any refund obligations. The Hair Salon Financial Model connects daily visits, category mix, prices, retail and staffing to the broader forecast; use this time check alongside it.
