Daycare Plan: Does the Next Enrollment Pay for the Staffing Step?
Compare additional enrollment contribution with the complete required staffing step.
On this page

The next enrolled place can trigger an entire staffing commitment. Evaluate expansion against the result of staying at the current size, rather than accepting it merely because the enlarged center still shows a positive result.
More enrolled places can leave less operating contribution
Original assumptions, $ per month. Ten places each pay $900 and cost $120 in service-dependent items. Existing coverage and premises cost $7,000. For this hypothetical locally reviewed room plan only, accepting an eleventh place requires $2,000 more staffing and permits at most twelve places. This is not a statutory ratio or a proposed capacity standard.
| Enrollment | Fees | Variable items | Staffing/premises | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 9,000 | 1,200 | 7,000 | 800 |
| 11 | 9,900 | 1,320 | 9,000 | -420 |
| 12 | 10,800 | 1,440 | 9,000 | 360 |
The eleventh place adds $780 before staffing but starts $2,000 of extra cost, reducing the result by $1,220. Filling both new places adds $1,560 before the same cost and still leaves the expansion $440 worse than ten places. The positive $360 is a whole-center result, not an expansion gain.
Identify what would need to change
At the assumed fee, the staffing step needs three additional places to cover $2,000, but this room plan allows only two. Do not solve that mismatch by exceeding its verified limit. A different permitted staffing arrangement, actual fee structure or separately valued objective would require a new case.
If the existing ten fees stay unchanged, the two new places would each need $1,120 to cover their $120 items and half the $2,000 staffing step. That is an arithmetic comparison, not a recommended fee or evidence families will accept it.
Even fees received on day 1 owe a month of care and coverage. Align actual start dates, staff recruitment, payroll and any delayed receipts. Use confirmed enrollment rather than inquiries, and maintain qualified operating requirements in every downside case. The Daycare Financial Model connects age-group places, occupancy, tuition and the broader cost plan.
Scope & limitations
Illustrative capacity trigger only, not a local staffing ratio or safe room rule. Qualified review must establish actual capacity and coverage.
