Tesla: Flat Revenue, Higher Costs and Investment Cash
Tesla Q3 2026 revenue was almost flat, while operating profit fell 55.8% and free cash flow fell 61.6%. Compare the reported business mix, costs and capex.
Tesla's Q3 2026 revenue was almost unchanged year over year at $28.0 billion, while operating income fell 55.8%. Operating cash remained near $6.3 billion, but more than doubled capital expenditure reduced free cash flow to $1.5 billion, down 61.6%.

Q3 2026 covers 2026-07-01 through 2026-09-30 and was released 2026-10-21. Revenue was $28,046 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 2026 results.
The complete FY2025 profit decline and the more recent Q3 decline are separate comparisons. Growth in services or a future technology opportunity cannot substitute for the vehicle, energy, operating-cost and capital-spending paths used in a forecast.
Full-year operating income (reported)
One scale starts at zero. Exact period ends, definitions and sources accompany the table below.
| Fiscal year | Period ended | $ millions |
|---|---|---|
| FY2024 | 2024-12-31 | 7,076 |
| FY2025 | 2025-12-31 | 4,355 |

Complete annual operating and cash basis
The complete annual comparison uses the FY2025 annual filing, filed 2026-01-29. Periods ended 2024-12-31 and 2025-12-31; amounts are $ millions. Filing date, fiscal-year label and period end are separate dates.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, reported | 97,690 | 94,827 |
| Operating income, reported | 7,076 | 4,355 |
| Operating cash flow, reported | 14,923 | 14,747 |
| Property purchases / capex, cash outflow | 11,342 | 8,527 |
| Operating cash less displayed capex, derived | 3,581 | 6,220 |
FY2025 revenue fell 2.9% to $94.827 billion and operating income declined 38.5% to $4.355 billion. Operating cash was $14.747 billion and capex $8.527 billion, leaving a derived $6.220 billion. The increase from FY2024's $3.581 billion mainly accompanied lower cash investment; it does not establish an operating-profit recovery.
The figures come from Tesla's Q3 2026 Update, furnished as Exhibit 99.1, dated October 21. The quarterly columns cover the three months ended September 30, 2026 and 2025. Amounts below are $ millions; the statements are unaudited.
Services growth offset weaker automotive and energy revenue
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Automotive revenue | 21,205 | 20,560 |
| Energy generation and storage revenue | 3,415 | 2,881 |
| Services and other revenue | 3,475 | 4,605 |
| Total revenue | 28,095 | 28,046 |
| Gross profit | 5,054 | 5,494 |
| Operating expenses | 3,430 | 4,776 |
| Operating income | 1,624 | 718 |
Services and other added $1,130 million, largely offsetting the combined $1,179 million decline in automotive and energy revenue. Gross profit improved $440 million, but operating expenses increased $1,346 million. The $906 million difference explains the fall in operating income. Higher gross profit alone was not enough to cover the expanded operating-cost base.
Capital spending took a larger share of operating cash
| Measure | Q3 2025 | Q3 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating cash flow | 6,238 | 6,263 |
| Capital expenditures, outflow | 2,248 | 4,732 |
| Issuer non-GAAP free cash flow | 3,990 | 1,531 |
The 2026 calculation is 6,263 - 4,732 = $1,531 million. Operating cash increased only $25 million, while capex increased $2,484 million. The resulting $2,459 million free-cash-flow reduction reflects higher cash investment rather than a comparable drop in operating cash.
The DCF must earn its assumed growth
For an explicit sensitivity, hold quarterly operating cash at $6,263 million and increase the reported capex deduction by 20%. Capex would be $5,678.4 million and cash after it $584.6 million. This assumed case isolates investment sensitivity; it is not Tesla guidance or a prediction of spending.
A forward valuation needs separate revenue, margin and investment paths for the businesses being valued. A future service or technology opportunity requires its own documented commercialization and cash assumptions; it is not established by the current consolidated sales total. Illustrative WACC of 10% or 12% and perpetual growth of 2% or 3% are separate discount assumptions, not observed company inputs. The enterprise forecast also needs operating taxes and working capital.
What customers pay for and what changes the economics
Tesla receives vehicle-sale and leasing revenue, sells energy-generation and storage products, and earns services revenue including charging, repairs and used vehicles. It also sells regulatory credits to other regulated manufacturers. The FY2025 filing says credits have negligible incremental cost and depend on regulatory arrangements. Energy-storage receivables follow contract billing milestones. These mechanisms should not be blended into one vehicle revenue or collection assumption. (FY2025 source.)
Analysis: Test vehicle demand after pricing and financing incentives, then separate regulatory-credit contribution. A headline automotive margin can move even when factory unit economics change less. Energy growth needs its own installation, warranty and billing schedule; higher deployed activity may consume cash before collection. Future autonomy or other technology scenarios need a separate commercialization path rather than being inferred from today's services line.
Operating signals to carry into the forecast
Watch these signals on a consistent period and definition. Undisclosed measures remain questions to investigate, rather than supplied KPI data.
- Vehicle deliveries, realized pricing and incentives: distinguish volume from the cost of stimulating demand.
- Automotive margin with credit contribution identified: avoid treating credit economics as a manufacturing efficiency.
- Energy revenue, margin and receivable milestones: link deliveries to collection and warranty cost.
- Services contribution and research/capital spending: require each proposed growth engine to earn its funding.
SWOT and the forecast consequence
SWOT classifications and forecast consequences are analytical judgments; evidence uses the dated sources cited below.
| Assessment | Evidence | Conditional forecast consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Automotive, energy and services provide different customer-payment streams. (FY2025 source.) | A broader mix can support growth, but test incremental contribution rather than assuming all service or energy sales have software margins. |
| Weakness | Vehicle pricing and financing incentives affect realized revenue per delivery. (FY2025 source.) | A volume recovery can retain less profit; stress price and unit cost together. |
| Opportunity | Energy storage offers a demand engine beyond vehicle sales. (FY2025 source.) | An upside needs delivered, collected projects after installation, manufacturing and warranty costs. |
| Threat | Regulatory credits depend on rules and buyers' compliance needs. (FY2025 source.) | A reduction can lower high-contribution revenue without an equal cost saving; model it separately from vehicle demand. |
Valuation implication: Compare vehicle contribution excluding a changing credit benefit with a separately funded energy ramp. Technology opportunities can be explicit scenarios, with probability, timing and investment assumptions identified; they cannot replace the operating cash case. Preserve the Q3 expense and capital-payment bridge above.
