Broadcom: Acquisitions, Amortization and Operating Cash
Broadcom's FY2025 revenue grew 23.9% to $63.887 billion, with semiconductor solutions and infrastructure software both expanding. Operating cash less property purchases rose to $26.914 billion. This complete 52-week year replaces the earlier 53-week acquisition-year headline; acquisition payments and software reinvestment remain separate from physical capex.

Q3 FY2026 covers 2026-05-04 through 2026-08-02 and was released 2026-09-02. Revenue was $29,591 million in this quarter. Source: official Q3 FY2026 results.
The newer quarter has a different semiconductor/software mix from the acquisition-year comparison. Physical capex is only one investment category; a cash forecast must also fund the research, integration and transactions it assumes.

One scale starts at zero. Exact period ends, definitions and sources accompany the table below.
| Fiscal year | Period ended | $ millions |

| FY2025 | 2025-11-02 | 26,914 |
Issuer free cash flow equals operating cash less cash property purchases for these periods; it remains before business acquisitions and financing. FY2024 has 53 weeks and a partial VMware year; FY2025 has 52 weeks and a full VMware year. Source: FY2025 annual report and comparative statements.
Semiconductors and software need separate reinvestment cases
Semiconductor demand follows customer hardware and computing requirements. Enterprise infrastructure software depends on customer relationships, retention and continued product investment. Their revenue mix is not a pair of disclosed segment cash margins.
Complete annual operating and cash basis
The complete annual comparison uses the FY2025 annual filing, filed 2025-12-18. Periods ended 2024-11-03 and 2025-11-02; amounts are $ millions. Filing date, fiscal-year label and period end are separate dates.
| Measure | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue, reported | 51,574 | 63,887 |
| Operating income, reported | 13,463 | 25,484 |
| Operating cash flow, reported | 19,962 | 27,537 |
| Property purchases / capex, cash outflow | 548 | 623 |
| Operating cash less displayed capex, derived | 19,414 | 26,914 |
| Segment | FY2024 | FY2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Semiconductor solutions | 30,096 | 36,858 |
| Infrastructure software | 21,478 | 27,029 |
| Group revenue | 51,574 | 63,887 |
FY2025 ended November 2, 2025 and contained 52 weeks; FY2024 ended November 3, 2024 and contained 53. FY2025 includes a full VMware year while the earlier year included it from November 22, 2023. Revenue growth is therefore not presented as an organic or equal-week comparison.
The latest selected transaction bridge is 26,914 - 0 net business-acquisition payments + 300 business-sale proceeds = $27,214 million. The earlier bridge, 19,414 - 25,978 + 3,485 = negative $3,079 million, is FY2024 comparative evidence. Neither bridge is the total change in cash or a recurring-cash forecast.
Amortization is not the same payment as buying the business
The annual statement presents acquisition-related intangible amortization in both cost of revenue and operating expenses. Those accounting charges allocate earlier investment across periods. They are not current acquisition cash payments; replacing them with zero in an adjusted-profit measure does not erase the economic need to maintain technology, software and customer relationships.
For a forecast, start with the reported result and document each adjustment. Separate a non-cash add-back from the cash spending needed to sustain the business, and keep restructuring payments visible until the source and timing justify an adjustment. The small physical-capital-spending line alone cannot establish a low total reinvestment requirement for the combined business.
Prepare a consistent valuation case
Reconcile the baseline's acquired and divested operations before selecting a growth assumption. A useful analyst scenario changes software retention or semiconductor demand while preserving the corresponding research, selling and integration spending. A separate scenario can test a further purchase with its own price and funding. These are proposed modelling choices, not reported guidance.
The manual company forecast accepts your operating assumptions. Before using the DCF calculator, decide the treatment of interest, debt, non-operating assets and dilution consistently with the cash-flow basis. What customers pay for and what changes the economics
Broadcom combines semiconductor solutions with infrastructure software. Semiconductor customers buy components and increasingly complex AI-related solutions, including custom accelerators and networking products. Enterprise software customers license infrastructure products, including the data-center virtualization portfolio. The FY2025 filing identifies dependence on significant customers and on software agreement renewals; neither a chip design win nor a signed multi-year software relationship guarantees indefinitely growing sales. (FY2025 source.)
Analysis: Do not forecast custom silicon like a diversified catalogue of interchangeable chips. A customer's deployment timetable can move a large program while engineering and supplier commitments remain. Software has a different test: renewal scope and commercial terms determine retained revenue, while compatibility and ongoing development determine whether the relationship can last. Combining these mechanisms into one cash-margin assumption hides the main risk.
Operating signals to carry into the forecast
Watch these signals on a consistent period and definition. Undisclosed measures remain questions to investigate, rather than supplied KPI data.
- Semiconductor program conversion: distinguish design selection, qualification, shipment and customer deployment.
- Customer concentration and deployment schedules: stress a delayed major program separately from broad end-market demand.
- Software renewal scope and terms: separate price changes from retained workloads or customer adoption.
- Gross margin and research spending by business context: require a sustainable product and support investment case.
SWOT and the forecast consequence
SWOT classifications and forecast consequences are analytical judgments; evidence uses the dated sources cited below.
| Assessment | Evidence | Conditional forecast consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Semiconductor and infrastructure-software operations serve different technology requirements. (FY2025 source.) | Different cycles can diversify contribution, but only after shared costs and reinvestment are reconciled. |
| Weakness | The filing identifies reliance on a limited group of significant customers and suppliers. (FY2025 source.) | A single deployment or supply delay can matter materially; use a concentrated-program stress rather than only a broad slowdown. |
| Opportunity | Custom AI accelerators and networking products address expanding compute requirements. (FY2025 source.) | An upside needs qualified designs converted into profitable shipments, with the corresponding engineering and supply costs. |
| Threat | Software growth depends on customer acceptance, compatibility and renewal agreements. (FY2025 source.) | A weaker renewal outcome can offset price benefits; stress retained scope before extrapolating a higher software margin. |
Valuation implication: Compare a successful silicon ramp with a one-program delay, then test software renewals independently. A strong combined cash result does not prove that both engines have low ongoing investment needs. Preserve the existing acquisition and amortization treatment when translating those scenarios into value.
Reporting scope
The principal annual baseline is FY2025. FY2024 remains an acquisition-year comparative with a different week count and consolidation period. The analysis does not supply a current organic-growth estimate, normalized cash forecast or share valuation.
